10 Outdoor Party Hacks You Need to Know Now

Backyard barbecues, summertime picnics, or even just a get-together with family and friends are all great opportunities to entertain outside. We’ve scoured the Internet for some of our favorite outdoor party ideas and hacks you need to know right now to make you and yours the host with the most!

  1. Use a kiddie pool as an “ice bucket” to keep the cold food and drinks cool. Group drinks into separate categories like water bottles, seltzer, and soda pop, or even keep cold foods (that might spoil if left outside too long) chilled over ice. One bonus: you can always add other small blow-up pools into the mix.
  2. Try a fitted twin sheet instead of table cloths. They stay place in the wind, and come in any color! You might even find some specialty-themed sheets (NFL fans, anyone?) at a discount retailer, online, or Goodwill.
  3. Offer bug spray, hand sanitizer, and sunscreen for your guests. You might try assembling them in a cute metal bucket or plastic sand pail.
  4. Save time by cooking hot dogs in advance, using a slow cooker. Place them in the Crockpot (standing upright often works well), then cook for 2.5 to 3 hours on high. For a whimsical touch, hollow out some bell peppers to add your condiments. Serve the ketchup in a red pepper, the mustard in a yellow pepper, and the pickle relish in a green pepper.
  5. Plug an ice cream cone with a mini marshmallow on the bottom. Help prevent messy leaks and drips in a sugar cone with a simple “stopper” inside the cone before you scoop the ice cream.
  6. Tie a bottle opener to a drink cooler. Grab some kitchen twine or crafting rope and add a bottle opener to make getting a cold one extra easy on your guests and keep from losing a bottle opener or wine corkscrew.
  7. Mason jars and tea lights make fabulous mood lighting. Talk about one man’s trash becoming your treasure … you can even take leftover pickle, salsa, or pasta sauce jars (with the labels removed) and add a simple tea light, or a little sand and a small votive to do the trick.
  8. Cover fruity drinks with a cupcake liner. Just add a straw, and voila! Your sugary drinks are protected from bugs that might be attracted to them, in an uber-cute combination of form and function.
  9. Add frozen fruit to keep things cool. Frozen grapes, blueberries, or strawberries not only freshen up a fruit punch or cocktail but also maintain the freshness and prevent ice from watering down the flavors.
  10. Make more s’mores from anywhere with roasting skewers and Sterno. Whether you have a fire pit or a grill won’t really matter if you have a can of Sterno, marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate. For a twist, add some freshly sliced strawberries, peanut butter, or pretzel sticks
