7 Moving Tips That Will Make Your Life Easier (#6 is our favorite)

You’re ready to make a move, but your stuff is staring you in the face, silently laughing at you. Packing up your belongings can be an overwhelming task, but there are many ways to make packing easier. It all starts with small steps that will help you accomplish your big goal. These seven residential moving tips will get you ready to pack and make your life easier.
Moving Tip #1: Don’t procrastinate. Don’t be mad at us for stating the obvious here. This seems simple enough, but getting started can be difficult. A few weeks prior to your move, start packing several boxes a day. Begin with items that are least necessary to your daily life. If you pace yourself, you will be more organized and the overall job won’t be so overwhelming. Make moving easier by not waiting to get started.
Moving Tip #2: Pack one space at a time. Focus on one area of a room at a time and don’t mix items from different rooms in one box if you can help it. To prevent small items from being lost or mistakenly thrown out with the packing paper, wrap them in brightly-colored tissue paper.
Moving Tip #3: Clearly label everything. On the top and side of each box, write a general description of the contents and the room name. Use different colored markers for each room, which will provide clarity for you and your movers.
Moving Tip #4: Keep things clean. Avoid the temptation to use regular newspaper or magazines because the ink may bleed onto your possessions. Use white packing paper to wrap all items instead.
Moving Tip #5: Use boxes designed for moving. Boxes acquired from grocery or convenient stores are not always clean and might not hold the weight of the items that you will be putting in them. In addition, varying box sizes can make loading more difficult.
Moving Tip #6: Realize what you can’t pack. Some common household items can’t be shipped because they are hazardous. Don’t end up on the wrong side of the law. Some items, you just can’t put on the moving truck. You’ll thank us later for stating this.
Moving Tip #7: Don’t box up everything. You should personally transport valuables, legal documents (wills, passports. etc.), and family heirlooms. Make packing easier by deciding what doesn’t need to be packed. Take it with you and it will be less likely to break and arrive in tact.
