Tire Pressure
It’s a good idea to check your tire pressure before you leave. Different models will have different optimal tire pressures, so you may want to consult your owner’s manual to figure out if your wheels have enough air. Having low tire pressure can indicate a hole or rip in your tire that you may want to get fixed before you and your family hit the road. Also, you’ll get you better gas mileage with full tires.
Battery Quality
If your car has had the same battery for a while you may want to check its condition. You can do this by looking at the wires that connect it and making sure none of them are frayed or torn. Consumer Reports suggests cleaning the terminals of your battery using baking soda and water. A damaged battery can result in your car being unable to start or even dying while you’re on the road. If the battery looks as though it’s extremely worn, you may want to invest in a new one, just to make sure that there are no mishaps.
Wiper Function
You might run into a summertime storm or shower on the road, and having good wipers is an important safety precaution for having adequate visibility. A good idea is to pour some water on your windshield and turn your wipers on. If it merely smudges the water rather than removing it, it may be time to get new wipers. This inexpensive measure can provide invaluable safety.
