Two Scenic Outdoor Retreats in Milwaukee
September 25, 2012
During the long ride to your new home and the arduous unpacking process that you underwent with the help of your Milwaukee movers, you might not have had a chance to get outside for a breath of fresh air. Here are a couple of scenic retreats that you may want to head to so you can take a break from the hustle and bustle.
Kettle Moraine State Forest
Kettle Moraine State Forest can be conveniently reached with a short drive and it’s open from 6am to 11pm every day. You and the family can pitch a tent and spend the night at the park’s campground or canoe on the crystalline waters of Ottawa Lake or White Water Lake.
If you want to take a hike, you’ll experience a diverse landscape that includes pine plantations, open prairies and forests. To help you navigate, you can get a trail map from the visitor center, which will help you recognize natural areas and landmarks. For shorter hikes, there are also self-guided trails.
Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory
While you may be in the heart of the Midwest, at the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, you’ll be able to escape to distant lands like the desert or a tropical oasis.
Under the desert dome, you’ll experience the arid, sandy environments of Africa, Madagascar, South America and North America. Each region has its own designated space so you can see the native species of cacti, shrubs and succulents.
In the tropical dome, you’ll be inundated with the colorful sights and pungent aromas of more than 1,200 jungle plant species as well as a vast array of tropical birds. As you walk through the dome, your mouth will water at the ripe bananas, grapefruits, guavas and star fruits.
