Granite countertops.

While granite once ruled the roost in the early 2000s, the Fixer Upper craze has set in to catapult lighter colors like white quartz and marble to the top. Wood and concrete are also becoming more popular.

Frosted and shaded glass.

Instead of frosted glass light fixtures, opt for clear glass or open lighting. Brighter light fixtures also allow you to experiment with other materials in the kitchen.

Open shelving.

Cabinets with glass doors are a strong compromise, allowing for pretty display cases with less dusting to do. Plus, closed cabinet doors and drawers can cover a multitude of sins (not to mention offering an abundance of storage options).

Dark paint and wood.

Dark wood makes a room feel smaller. On the other hand, light paint and wood brightens up spaces and is also on-trend with more open kitchens.

DIY backsplashes and cabinets.

While these features can certainly add some character to your kitchen, if you’re planning to move soon, then it can also become a distraction to a future buyer. Sometimes the simple shape of the cabinet can date your home immediately.
